As people living in a land of overabundance and excessive indulgence, it is sometimes easy to forget how incredibly lucky we are. For most of us, “There’s nothing to eat in the house!” really means “There’s nothing I want to eat in the house” and the solution is usually as simple as hopping in the car and heading to one of the many local grocery stores, where we find literally piles and piles of inexpensive food.
Most of us have so much food, in fact, that our children become picky eaters because they know if they don’t particularly like one thing, there’s always more food right around the corner. My kids act like this sometimes. I bet yours do too.
Yet, for most of the world, finding something to eat–anything at all to eat–isn’t that easy.
Worldwide Poverty Statistics
Did you know that over 600 million children worldwide are living in extreme poverty? Children just like yours, who go to bed each night with their little bellies rumbling. (source)
And even more importantly, did you know that poverty is completely solvable? In fact, it is estimated that the cost of completely ending world poverty is only 1 percent of the global income. One percent. That’s minuscule.
So, why aren’t we doing something about it?
The good news is, people ARE doing something about it. And you can help.
About Food for the Hungry
“And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”” –Luke 3:11
Food for the Hungry is a Christian organization that has been fighting to end poverty for over 40 years now. And they don’t just drop off a few meals to those in need. Instead, they roll up their sleeves and partner right alongside the local people, teaching them, equipping them, and helping them make their community safe, nurturing and livable for adults and children alike.
They don’t just take care of the people they find there, either; they work with the local churches, leaders and families to give them the knowledge, tools and resources they need to take care of themselves long after Food for the Hungry is gone.
As a result, lives have been saved and communities have been transformed. Children are no longer starving and dying, but living and thriving. Families are no longer struggling to find enough food to eat, but growing enough food to feed their families, sell the extra and make enough money to send their children to school–all things we take for granted here in the United States.
You Can Help!
“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” –1 John 3:17-18
Remember how I said earlier that it would only take 1 percent of the world’s income to completely end poverty? While poverty may seem like too big of an issue for anyone to tackle, the truth is, if everyone gave a little, we could all partner together to end world hungry for good.
You don’t have to be rich. The fact is: You already are.
If you have food in your fridge, a closet full of clothes, a car that runs or more toys in your house than you know what to do with, you are rich! And you have an obligation to help those who can’t help themselves. Because honestly, if you don’t–who will?
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” –Proverbs 19:17
Can you simply imagine being the mother who has to look in her child’s eyes and say “I’m sorry; I don’t have any food to give you?” Or to watch your child slowly grow thinner and thinner, knowing that there was nothing you could do to help?
Thankfully, helping is easy.
For only $35 a month, you can sponsor a child and make a real difference for a family that desperately needs your help. Or, if you can’t commit to $35 a month, you have the option to give a one-time donation in the amount of your choosing. Chances are, I bet you could make a small sacrifice somewhere.
After all, all around the world, children are dying and you have the power to help. Won’t you say yes to a child today?
