25 Ways You Can Help Your Children Prepare for Christmas

Every year it’s the same story…

You start the Christmas season with the best of intentions.

This year is the year you’re going to teach your kids it’s not all about the presents — it’s all about Jesus.

This year is the year you’re going to do lots of fun Christian Christmas crafts for kids to remind your children of the true Christmas story.

This year is the year you’re going to finally slow down and savor the moments that matter most.

But every year it’s the same. December 25th rolls around and you realize yet again: Your kids have way too many presents and not nearly enough Jesus.

The good news is: It doesn’t have to be this way.

You can create a peaceful, joy-filled Advent season centered around the beauty of Jesus’s birth, and it’s easier than you think!

You don’t have to get rid of all the Christmas presents, events, and traditions your family already loves and looks forward to every year.

Instead, simply add in a few new Christmas traditions this year — ones that will keep you and your children’s focus where it belongs.

Here are 25 quick, easy, and meaningful activities to help your children prepare their hearts for Christmas this year:

  1. Read the Christmas Story (either straight from the Bible or I really like this one)
  2. Bake Christmas Cookies (here are a few of my favorite Christmas cookie recipes)
  3. Donate to a Local Shelter
  4. Thank Jesus for Coming to Earth
  5. Make Christmas Ornaments (like these Star of Bethlehem Christmas Ornaments)
  6. Choose One Behavior to Improve
  7. Go to Church
  8. Watch a Christmas Movie
  9. Pray for Friends/Family in Need
  10. Make a Christmas Countdown Chain

  19. Pray for Other Children in Need
  20. Sing Christmas Carols
  21. Color Christmas Pictures
  22. Donate to a Charity You Love

Countdown to Christmas activity

Then, once you’ve chosen your activities, you’ll want a way to keep up with them.

For example, you might choose to:

  • Write your ideas on popsicle sticks to pull from a jar
  • Write your ideas on a countdown chain and pull one chain each day
  • Keep your ideas in a note on your phone
  • OR write your ideas on a printable calendar, so you can cross off one activity each day.

Want me to send you a copy of the printable activities calendar shown above? Simply enter your name and email below, and I’ll send it your way!

When you do, I’ll also send you tons of great resources to help YOU grow in faith too. I just know you’re going to love it.

  1. I love this and the ideas could grow as your children grow. Pinned your post so I’ll remember to do this with my children next year. We may even go ahead and make a family chain for the remaining two weeks of advent. Thanks!

    1. I thought it was pretty neat too. And I don’t imagine it’s too late to start either. You could pick your favorite ones or combine a few of them.

  2. What a beautiful countdown chain idea! This year we have tried to do an act of kindness every 2-3 days, but to have something daily…. And i love the simple act of praying for your school or to say a thank you to God. Beautiful things to teach a child!

Pinning this one for next year!

    1. I think every 2-3 days is a great idea too! It wouldn’t be so overwhelming that way, and if you missed a day, you’d have a chance to catch up. I just really like the idea of having the tasks written down. That way you’re more likely to do them. (Not that we finished our chain anyways…. lol)

  3. Thank you for this resource. It is a shame that your pop ups make it so difficult to access the page from Pinterest.

    1. You’re welcome! And yeah, I keep trying to make it smaller, but that’s hard to do on mobile. Hope you still got your activities calendar! 🙂
