Last week, while I was sitting in the car waiting to pick up my oldest from school, a new song I’d never heard before–“Do Something” by Matthew West–came on the radio. And I LOVED it.
In the first verse, Matthew West talks about how he looked around the earth and saw all of the poverty, crime and hurt, and He was disgusted. Why didn’t God DO SOMETHING? Didn’t He care?
This is an argument I’ve heard a LOT. How can there possibly be a God when there is so much crime and evil in the world? Doesn’t He care? Why isn’t He doing anything about it? How can God let people get cancer? How can He let babies be aborted? How can He let people mass murder innocent victims or abuse their children?
Either there must not be a God at all, or maybe He just doesn’t care about us. Either way, He’s not worth spending time on.
But then it gets to the end of the first verse and to my very favorite part of the song. West sings:
“So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?”
He said, “I did. I created YOU.””
Sure, God could just snap His fingers and end all hunger, disease, crime and war. He could do that easily. But He’s got a better plan. A plan that involves YOU. Why don’t you do something?
What things stir your heart? What things make you mad? If you could wipe one problem off the face of the Earth completely, what would it be?
Why don’t you do something?
Seriously. What steps could you take TODAY or this week to make a difference?
Don’t just say “oh I should…” or “that’d be nice…” or “I wish I could but…” Do something.
Even if all you can offer is something small, remember: The God we serve took five small loaves and bread and two small fishes and fed 5,000 men (plus women and children). He can do miraculous things with whatever you’ve got to offer too. But only if you offer it.
Here’s the song. Listen and be inspired. DO SOMETHING.
Okay, here’s your challenge. Answer in the comments below. What is something that absolutely breaks your heart? How can you DO SOMETHING?
