20 Easy Children's Bible Verses for Kids to Memorize

The high-pitched wailing of my five-year-old daughter pierced my ears.

She burst through my bedroom door with tears flowing freely, pleading her case before me about how her brother was treating her unjustly.

I did not have the energy or the will to be judge and jury at that moment of which Legos go where.

But it was either suffering through that or suffering through screaming, so I trudged down to the playroom.

While it was tempting to yell at the offending parties and just shut down the whole operation, I opened my Bible and read one of my favorite children’s Bible verses instead:

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.  —Colossians 3:12, NLT

I talked about each of the words and asked my kids if they knew what they meant. They quietly listened and thought about it. Then we calmly talked through the situation and resolved the argument quickly with very few tears.

The passage came to mind because it’s one of the children’s Bible verses that we memorized the previous month, so it was very familiar to us.

It’s important to not only teach our kids how to memorize Scripture but also, to show them how to put these children’s Bible verses to use. This moment with my kids was just an opportunity to show them how to put what they had learned into practice.

That’s one of the reasons I think there’s so much value in memorizing Bible verses for kids.

When they’ve already stored children’s Bible verses in their memories, it makes your job easier as a parent when you’re teaching them how to live.

They already know the why (i.e. God’s people treat others with kindness) so you can just show them the how (i.e. not screaming at your brother).

Psalm 127:3–5 says,

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.

Here’s how to equip your “arrows” for the rest of their lives in the instruction of the Lord, with 25 Bible verses for kids.

Tips to Help Your Kids Memorize Children’s Bible Verses

I think a lot of parents mistakenly believe that asking kids to memorize Scripture is too much to ask or expect.  The truth is, kids can be more adept at memorizing than adults. (Maybe this is why Jesus says adults should be more like children!)

Even as infants, kids’ brains are literally little sponges, designed to retain a lot of information. Don’t hold back teaching children’s Bible verses for memorization; my kids have memorized whole chapters!

Alternatively, you might feel like helping your kids memorize children’s Bible verses takes too much effort.

While teaching Bible verses for kids certainly does take some effort, if you’re serious about helping kids make their faith their own, it’s well worth it.

And the good news is, teaching children’s Bible verses doesn’t have to be torturous.

There are ways to make memorization of children’s Bible verses much easier and more enjoyable.

Here are 7 tips to help you get started:

1. Use Music

There are tons of Bible verses for kids.

Turn these Bible memory verses for kids into a song, and they will never get out of your head!

One of our personal favorites is the Fruit of the Spirit. Your kids will learn Galatians 5:22-23. What a fun way to teach children’s Bible verses to memorize!

If you would like a little help putting your Scriptures for kids into a song, try the book Scripture Song Sing-A-Long: 10 Memory-Verse Songs for Kids.

2. Join a Group

We have a program, called Awana, through our church that teaches Bible verses for kids each month. It’s more fun to do it with a group, and sometimes there are incentives.  It’s a fun way a lot of people I know like to find children’s Bible verses to memorize.

3. Try Copywork

If your kids are old enough, copying Bible memory verses for kids helps them retain the information (plus it’s an opportunity to work on their handwriting).

There are tons of great Bible copywork books on Amazon, if you’d like a physical workbook your kids can work through more independently.

Otherwise, you can simply have them write out the children’s Bible verses by hand from the list below.

4. Set a Good Example

My children embrace my teaching Scripture because they see me memorizing it myself. Try memorizing Bible memory verses for kids as a family! Learning is much more fun for them (and us too!) when tackling it together.

5. Make it Part of Your Daily Routine

The key to committing information to memory is seeing it frequently. Have your family practice reciting children’s Bible verses at the same time each day. We like to do it around breakfast.

6. Get Creative

I was amazed the other day when a friend of mine shared on Facebook how her six-year-old is starting to do “Bible journaling(at his own level of course). Let your kids explore their own interests and talents as they discover God’s Word! See if you can use one of the Bible scriptures for kids from below to do a project.

7. Encourage Sharing

Another great way to get involved with Bible memory verses for kids is to engage in something that will encourage sharing. This also teaches kids to share the Word of God with others in their homes or even in their communities.

A great way to do that is with these adorable Bible Verses for Kids coloring cards.

Now, let’s get started with a list of some great children’s Bible verses!

20 Best Children’s Bible Verses to Memorize

Okay, are you ready? This is obviously not an exhaustive list of children’s Bible verses, but it is a great start in getting your kids started.

These are all short Bible verses for kids on basic topics that help lay the foundation of your kids’ faith. Once you get through these, I highly encourage you to explore more easy Bible memory verses for kids.

(By the way, these verses are from the NIV, but feel free to use the translation you prefer.)

Want a printable list of children’s Bible verses to memorize? I (Gina) have some of these and many others in this collection.

1. John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

There’s hardly a better place to start than how much God loves us and what He has done for us.

2. Psalm 37:4

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Children naturally desire a lot of things (Christmas lists, anyone?), and this verse reminds them to find joy and delight in the Lord; the rest will then follow.

3. John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

This one is a little trickier for little ones to understand, but I think it’s good to start introducing complex topics like the Trinity at a young age. I like this passage because it demonstrates how Jesus’ teachings are authoritative because he (the Word) is God!

4. Luke 10:27

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

This basic command from Jesus (also found in Matthew 22) is the foundation of all we do as Christians. It applies to pretty much every situation!

5. Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Sound familiar? This is the verse I used with my kids recently. I found this one sentence to packed full of practical wisdom!

6. Ephesians 4:32

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

This is another one I’ve referred to frequently that reminds kids how they are to treat others.

7. John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

That’s three whole times it says “love one another.” Just to help the point sink in a little bit.

8. Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

I’ve found it very helpful to use these words when I want to be positive in my parenting.

9. Ephesians 6:1–2

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Well, that one’s self-explanatory. Obey your parents so that things will go well for you!

10. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

This one is helpful for kids and adults, whenever we get bad attitudes!

11. Matthew 19:14

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

What a great message for kids that Jesus loves them and desires for them to come to Him as they are.

12. Proverbs 1:8

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

This reminds kids to look to their parents for instruction rather than the culture around them.

13. Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

These children’s Bible verses from the book of Proverbs will help kids see that God’s ways are always going to be better than our own.

14. Psalm 139:13–15

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

These children’s Bible verses are a bit longer to memorize, but I love it because it reminds them that God created them in the most wonderful way and that they had value to Him even before they were born.

15. Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Every time kids look up at the sky, they can be reminded of God’s greatness!

16. Jeremiah 17:9–11

“I the Lord search the heart
    and examine the mind,
to reward each person according to their conduct,
according to what their deeds deserve.”

This verse explains how God looks at our hearts and behavior and rewards us accordingly.

17. Psalm 62:1–2

Truly my soul finds rest in God;
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

I love these lines as children’s Bible verses because they remind us always that our rest and strength will always come from God.

18. 1 Timothy 4:12

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

This is a classic line for young people, reminding them that they can represent the kingdom of God no matter their age.

19. James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Kids love receiving a good gift, right? This is a great reminder for them about where all wonderful things come from.

20. Genesis 1:27

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

This verse teaches kids that every human being is created in God’s own image. This is a foundational principle for every believer to live by.

  1. I found a scripture memory system at Real Food Enthusiast, and it’s wonderful! We use it every weekday, and my sons are learning a new verse every week. It’s a very simple system, and if life gets in the way, and we miss a few days (or weeks), it’s easy to pick up where we left off!

Great post! Very helpful, thank you!

  4. A correction: The memory verse you list as John 10:27 is really Luke 10:27.

  5. I LOVE these! So much! I never grew up memorizing Bible verses, so it’s pretty new to me. I’ve been thinking about Bible journaling with my 7 year olds. I started that habit myself a little while back and love it. They also LOVE Jesus music. VBS songs and Toby Mac. We’re going to try some more of these. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

    1. That sounds like it would be so much fun to do together! I’m glad you you are enjoying 🙂

  6. Thank you for offering to help. I am a grandmother and will use your ideas to help lead my grandchildren to Jesus. One thing I am going to start today is posting a scripture every week on the wall and then I want to make the same scripture card for their backpacks.

    1. Hi Lynda, That is a wonderful idea. Train them young in the Word. Thank you for your idea.
