Beyond the Basics: 10 Obscure Bible Stories You’ve Probably Never Heard

There are Bible stories most people have heard through childhoods spent in Sunday School, or from pop culture references – like Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit, Daniel in the den of lions, or Jesus dying on the cross.

But there are some interesting accounts contained in the pages of Scripture that the majority of Americans aren’t familiar with.

 

1. A Man Is Bit by a Viper While Making a Campfire

You have heard of the apostle Paul, but did you know according to Acts 28:3, he was bitten by a viper while making a fire?

He was shipwrecked on an island and was gathering kindling when the viper attached itself to his hand. Paul shook the snake off into the fire and wasn’t affected at all!

It was so impressive in fact, that the local people who witnessed it thought Paul must be a god to have sustained no injury.

 

2. God Commands Birds to Bring Food to a Prophet

In 1 Kings 17, Elijah prophesied to an evil king that there would be a drought in Israel.

After he delivered God’s words, God told him to go and stay by a brook and that daily he would send bread and meat by some ravens– the first version of DoorDash?

 

3. A Left-Handed Man Kills a Very Fat King

God raised Ehud to be a judge over Israel in Judges 3.

Ehud went to give a tribute to the king who held the Israelites captive, but he had concealed a double-edged sword under his right thigh.

When the king had everyone leave his presence to receive the special message from Ehud, Ehud grabbed the sword with his left hand and stabbed the king with his sword and the entire sword entered the belly of the overweight king.

 

4. A Woman Turns Into a Pillar of Salt

When God saved Lot and his family from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, they were instructed not to look back.

Lot’s wife couldn’t help herself and turned around to see what was happening to her home; she immediately became a pillar of salt, according to Genesis 19:26.

 

5. An Angel Breaks a Man Out of Jail

Peter was arrested for being a Christian by King Herod and was chained between two guards before his trial.

During the night, he was woken up by an angel hitting him on the side and his chains fell away from his wrists so he could escape.

 

6. A Woman Drives a Tent Peg into a Man’s Head

In Judges 4, an army general whose troops were defeated escaped the battle on foot, and a woman named Jael offered him refuge in her tent.

She helped him lie down, covered him with a blanket, and gave him a drink of milk. While he was sleeping, she took a tent peg and hammered it through his skull.

 

7. An Entire Herd of Pigs Jumps Off a Cliff and Drowns

Three of the Gospel accounts tell the story of a demon-possessed man encountering Jesus at a cemetery.

The demons cried out in fear and asked Jesus if they could enter a nearby herd of pigs when he cast them out and he agreed.

When the demons entered the pigs, the herd rushed down a steep bank and drowned in the sea.

 

8. An Old Man Gets Revenge by Calling Bears to Eat Some Rowdy Boys

Elisha was a prophet who was called “Bald Head” by a group of boys in 2 Kings 2.

He cursed them in the name of the Lord and two female bears came out of the words and mauled the boys!

 

9. A Boy Falls Asleep in Church and Falls Out of a Third-Story Window

In Acts 20, Paul is preaching a long sermon and a young man who was sitting in a window fell to his death from a third-story window.

The preacher went down and hugged the young man, and he came back to life and went home with his family.

 

10. A Donkey Reprimands Her Owner

In Numbers 22, Balaam was a prophet who was going on a mission God had forbidden.

Three times, God placed an angel in front of Balaam’s donkey to prevent him from going further, not seeing the angel, Balaam beat his donkey for stopping.

After the third time, God gave the donkey the ability to speak and she asked Balaam why he had beaten her three times.

Finally, Balaam’s eyes were opened to see the angel and he realized his donkey was helping him.
