How Does Astral Work?

Getting started with Astral is pretty straightforward.

Initial Set Up

First, you’ll go to their website, create an account, and answer a few set up questions, including your name, contact information, and faith preferences as well as your child(ren)’s name, age, grade level, interests, and learning difficulties (such as dyslexia or ADHD).

Diagnostic and Personalized Lessons

After you finish setting up your account, it takes about 15 minutes for the AI to generate the initial 2-4 diagnostic lessons.

My Honest Astral Tutor Review: Pros and Cons

No program is perfect, and like any curriculum, Astral has pros and cons. Here’s my honest take so you can decide for yourself which things are pros or cons, non-issues or dealbreakers.

Pros of Astral

Complete K–8 math curriculum. You don’t have to go hunting for different resources or piece everything together. Everything your child needs for math is already in one place.
Customized to your child’s interests and abilities. The AI builds every lesson specifically for your child based on what they know and what they’re into, so it never feels like a one-size-fits-all worksheet. It can even help a kid who doesn’t particularly care for math be more interested and engaged when lessons are built around the things they already love.
Great for kids with learning differences. Instead of fighting with your child to do worksheets they don’t understand, the AI can use voice chatting to explain the lesson, answer their questions, and walk them through exactly what they need to know in whatever way works best for them. That is a huge deal for kids who learn better that way.
The AI never gets tired, bored, or frustrated. It will explain the same concept as many times as your child needs, from as many different angles as it takes, with the same patience every single time. And your child gets to choose an AI buddy to learn alongside them, which makes it a lot more fun and engaging than staring at a worksheet alone.
Your child works independently. You don’t have to sit right there and teach them the lessons yourself. And if you walk away, you can see a very comprehensive overview of everything they did and learned in your parent dashboard.
Completely self-paced. Whether your child needs extra time and practice or is ready to race ahead, the AI adjusts accordingly. Kids who need more practice get it without feeling bad about it. Solid customer support. Astral customer support was extremely quick and easy to get ahold of. They responded quickly to offer help and immediately corrected one area of potential concern I found. (More on this below.) I was very impressed with how helpful they were.

Cons of Astral

Math only. If you’re looking for a complete homeschool curriculum that covers all subjects, you’ll still need other resources for everything else.
Not accredited by any outside agency. Astral is transparent and intentional about this. Their philosophy is that parents are the teacher and don’t need outside validation. But if accreditation matters to you, that’s something to know going in.
You can’t just sit down and start. After you finish set up, it takes about 15 minutes for the AI to generate the initial diagnostic lessons. This isn’t a big deal, but it could be a real annoyance if you have a child who already doesn’t love math.
It’s a newer, less tested product. This doesn’t mean it’s bad. As I mentioned previously, I was able to reach support easily, and they seemed to genuinely care about my experience with the program. But they haven’t had the years of feedback, iteration, and testimonials that more established programs have. I imagine this will come with time.
Limited variety at any given time. Because lessons are generated in real time, there isn’t a big library your child can pick and choose from. If your child needs a change of pace or wants to bounce around, that flexibility isn’t really there. (This could be a pro or con, if your child gets distracted easily.)
Missing the human element. No matter how good the technology is, it can’t see your child’s face or read their body language. It can’t tell if they’re bored, frustrated, or quietly checked out. A human tutor picks up on things in the moment that AI simply can’t.
Added screen time. For families who are already trying to reduce screen time, that’s worth factoring in. It’s educational screen time, but it’s still screen time.
No password protection between dashboards. Kids can freely switch between the student portal and the parent dashboard (and between siblings’ dashboards) without any kind of password or barrier. Depending on your kids, that may or may not be a concern.
The price. At $100 a month, this is not the budget option. I do think the value is there for families looking for this exact solution, but it may simply be out of budget for many families.

Is Astral Safe? What Parents Need to Know About AI Homeschool Curriculum

I’ll be honest. I have mixed feelings about using AI with kids. I use AI myself all the time, but I’m an adult using it to speed up tasks I already know how to do — not a child who is still rapidly developing. None of us fully knows yet what the long-term effects of normalizing AI with children will be, and that does concern me.

However, I will say that Astral has done the work to create a safe, closed, math-only environment where your child can get the help they need while dramatically reducing your child’s risk.

Your child can’t access the Internet through their Buddy (nor can the Internet access them). And when I tried to get the AI Buddy off topic, it gently but firmly redirected me back to the math lesson right away. It isn’t a generic, multi-purpose chat box. It’s definitely designed to explain math concepts clearly and patiently.

Furthermore, parents are able to see a complete log of any conversations their children have with their AI Buddy (whether via text or voice). It does take a few clicks to find it, but it gives me huge peace of mind as a parent to know that my child can’t have a private conversation with AI about questionable topics (with or without my knowledge).

And most importantly of all, when I raised a concern with the Astral team about a potential workaround I found, they immediately disabled the feature in question (within hours, even though it was the weekend), invited any further feedback I might have, and shared the plans they already had to make the platform even better.

This shows me that they aren’t just throwing a product into the marketplace. They really care about getting this right and keeping it safe for kids.

My overall take: While I do have some concerns about the future of AI with children, I see the potential downside of using this AI technology as very, very small compared to the tremendous benefit it can offer the right family.

At $100 a month, this is not the budget option, and that’s okay. While there are families who would genuinely love this program and still not be able to afford it, Astral would be well worth the investment for the right family.

For comparison, consider that a private math tutor typically runs $60 to $120 an hour, and that’s one session a week if you’re lucky.
