Reading Eggs Review: Fun Online Reading Program for Kids
Apparently, I’m a “mean mom.”
Every summer, I make my kids do 30-45 minutes of summer homework each day so:
- They don’t forget everything they learned during the school year.
- They can continue to practice any skills they still need to work on.
- I can have peace and quiet to get my work done (since I’m still working from home).
Their homework assignments vary but typically include tasks like completing workbook pages, practicing math facts, reading independently, writing a story, finishing a piano or foreign language lesson, or playing an educational online learning game like Reading Eggs, the sponsor of today’s blog post.
The kids complain about the daily workbook pages (loudly) to anyone who will listen. But as their mother and a former teacher, I know how important it is for kids to keep their brains active all year long.
If I were really on the ball, I’d put together a whole multi-subject curriculum… but I’m trying to work full-time while wrangling four kids and a puppy and maintaining a few shreds of sanity. I don’t have time for all that.

That’s why I’m so thankful for online learning games like Reading Eggs. With Reading Eggs, my elementary-school-aged kids can practice and improve their reading skills in a way that’s fun for them… and not a lot of work for me!

What is Reading Eggs?
Reading Eggs is a multi-award-winning online reading program designed to help children ages 2 to 13 learn to read (or improve their current reading skills) in a fun, engaging, and effective way.
Created by expert educators with over 30 years of experience in early childhood education, Reading Eggs uses interactive lessons, games, songs, and rewards to teach children essential reading and phonics skills in a fun, game-like format. Children simply follow the learning path to complete lessons, practice concepts, and read engaging ebooks — either independently or with an adult.
A comprehensive guided reading program, Reading Eggs includes four reading programs (plus a bonus math program, Mathseeds) that gently guide children through each stage of the reading process.
- Reading Eggs Junior: Best for children ages 2-4
- Reading Eggs: Best for children ages 3-7
- Fast Phonics: Best for children ages 5-10
- Reading Eggspress: Best for children ages 7-13
- Mathseeds: Best for children ages 3-9

How Does Reading Eggs Work?
Reading Eggs guides children through a series of self-paced games, lessons, and stories, each designed to teach one (or more) of the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
Rather than going in order through the alphabet, Reading Eggs helps kids start reading fast by teaching the most important sounds and everyday words first. This way, kids don’t simply memorize sounds. They learn how letters come together to make words and sentences that actually make sense. In fact, children read their first storybook in lesson nine!
The platform is very intuitive and easy to use. Children complete lessons along a guided learning path that offers colorful animations, fun challenges, and built-in rewards to keep kids engaged and motivated.
As a reward for completing lessons, children earn points, which they can use to read from a library of over 4,000 leveled ebooks—each one tailored to include only words they’ve already learned.
Unlike other online learning platforms, Reading Eggs doesn’t just offer a random selection of fun games with no real strategy. It’s a science-backed approach that guides children through progressively more difficult lessons so children actually learn the concepts in the order they can handle them.
Plus, while other programs focus on the beginning stages of learning only, Reading Eggs is good for children ages 2 – 13, so the fun doesn’t have to end!

What is Mathseeds?
In addition to a full reading curriculum, Reading Eggs also offers a full math curriculum: Mathseeds.
In the same way Reading Eggs helps children develop their reading skills, Mathseeds uses interactive and engaging lessons to help kids ages 3-9 build their math skills. Plus, it’s fun so kids don’t mind that they’re also learning!
A free trial of Mathseeds is included at no extra cost when you sign up for a 30-Day Reading Eggs free trial.

My Reading Eggs Review
As a busy working mom of four, I don’t have time to sit and practice reading with my kids for hours each week. I need supplemental educational activities that my kids can work on (mostly) independently.
This is why I was so excited to do a Reading Eggs review — I’m always looking for fun, educational activities to help my kids keep their brains engaged during the summer, and this program definitely fits the bill!
Reading Eggs has plenty of great features that make it a win for both me and my kids.
My favorite features include the:
- Placement Test: I love that kids start out by taking a placement test, and the score *isn’t* their grade level. This eliminates the embarrassment and struggle of starting at a different point than the child may feel he or she should be ready for.
- Intuitive Guided Learning Path: Once children begin their lessons, they go through a guided learning path that directs children which lessons to work on next. I love that the program is very intuitive so children can learn the exact concepts they’re ready for without needing a parent to assign individual lessons.
- Learning Options: Once children take the placement test, they can either choose to take lessons along a guided learning path or visit special areas like the Stadium, Mall, Reading Journal, Apartment, Library, Trophy Room, or Arcade. This gives children a sense of choice and adventure as they explore all the different options for ways to learn.

When asked for their honest review of Reading Eggs, my children (9 and 11) both shared that they didn’t like the background music (this can be turned off in the settings section), but otherwise, they felt the activities were fun, interesting, and “just right” (not too easy or too hard).
Overall, I’d say that if you’re looking for a fun, affordable, and research-backed way to help your child build strong reading skills, Reading Eggs is definitely worth a try.
With its interactive lessons, engaging rewards system, and thousands of leveled books, it’s designed to make learning to read feel like a game—while giving parents the tools to track real progress.
Whether your child is just starting out or needs extra practice, Reading Eggs can meet them right where they are and help them grow in confidence. Plus, with a free trial available, there’s no reason not to give it a go!
